The Akhter Hameed Khan Foundation (AHKF) is a Pakistan-based Section 42, non-profit, non-government organization working in urban poverty, women’s economic engagement, health, digital literacy and climate resilience in informal urban settlements across Pakistan. AHKF’s journey follows the development philosophy of renowned social scientist, Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan (1914-1999), founder of Orangi Pilot Project (Karachi), and Comilla Academy (Bangladesh). Using a women-centric, participatory approach AHKF partners with local communities, public and private sector to find sustainable local solutions that enable urban poor households to become risk resilient, prosperous, healthy and technology-enabled for the 21st century.
AHKF Urban Impact Lab (UIL), located in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, draws inspiration from the development approach of renowned social scientist Akhter Hameed Khan (1914-1999) and his transformative Orangi Pilot Project (OPP) founded in 1980 in Karachi’s Orangi town, one of the world’s largest urban slums, studies and researches on urbanization, public health, climate cohesive communities, decision making, population growth, economics of poverty, women’s empowerment, and mental health. The knowledge products (papers, policy briefs, and infographics) are publically available and influence the national and global debates on development and poverty reduction.
