Marie Stopes Society is a social enterprise that provides comprehensive reproductive health services for people throughout Pakistan.
Marie Stopes Pakistan has been delivering contraception and reproductive health services across Pakistan since 1990, and now provides services to more than half a million women every year.
The programme operates across a large proportion of the country and their services are available to more than 70 million people. Over the past decade the programme has averted 4.6 million unintended pregnancies, 1.9 million unsafe abortions and 6,000 maternal deaths.
The security situation, large rural population, and regular natural disasters make providing contraception and other services in Pakistan particularly challenging. It is one of six countries that account for more than half of all maternal deaths worldwide, and 65% of the country’s 184 million people lives in rural areas.
How we deliver services in Pakistan
Marie Stopes Pakistan uses a range of approaches to ensure that they can help as many women as possible to choose if, and when, they get pregnant.
Currently they have:
74 centres in urban areas.
8 outreach teams taking contraception to public health facilities in rural areas.
15 mobile units providing contraception services from vans.
670 private healthcare providers operating under the social franchise brand, Suraj.
2,310 health service providers, taking information and contraception to women in the communities where they live.
One maternal and child health centre providing emergency obstetric care 24 hours a day.
A bilingual information website - www.srhmatters.org - manned by a panel of professional doctors and psychologists; the first of its kind to launch in Pakistan.
