Registered as a not for profit, ‘Media Matters for Democracy’ is a vision and a belief that a liberal, professional media industry is the cornerstone of a progressive, democratic society. We strive for an inclusive, democratic media industry that is tech-friendly, progressive diverse, professional and secure. We work towards a digitally advanced, sustainable and empowered media.
We see the mass media as an amalgamation of traditional and digital media; our work thus incorporates mainstream media and the internet, mainstream journalists and those using the digital technologies to voice their opinions. We envision ‘freedom of expression’ as not just an Article in the Constitution, but a civil right, to be exercised without fear or intimidation by the media and more so, the citizens. We believe that introduction and incorporation of digital technologies in the mainstream media would create the space for inclusion of local, diverse voices that are currently ignored and believe that digital media is the future of journalism and an empowering tool to exercise freedom of expression.
Our vision is safe, free, fair and responsible media that supports progressive and democratic state and a tolerant society – Our mission is to foster an environment where both online and offline media are independent in letter and spirit, responsible and accountable to its consumers, holds high journalistic standards, initiates tough debates without the fear of being threatened or targeted, incorporates innovation and technology and inspires values of a true and progressive democracy.
