Philanthrope is a social, non-governmental, not-for-profit, established in 1998 at the University of Peshawar by a group of students belonging to KP and FATA. It focuses on marginalized communities and impoverished social groups with the towering goal of alleviating poverty through developing social, natural, human and financial capital of the communities. Believing in the idea that sustainable development and economic growth need social organization and resource mobilization; and in order to become voice of the voiceless, fight against social injustice & inequality; Philanthrope was founded with the motives to mobilize, motivate and organize communities. That is why more than 500 members and volunteers throughout KP and FATA have their links with the organization in one way or the other. Two years later, Philanthrope grew out of the campus and acquired registration with Joint Stock Companies & Societies under Societies Act XXI of 1860 in June 2000.
The failure of its unique self-help Education program in Mardan had disappointed its founders and hindered the activities of the organization from 2001 to 2004. In order to minimize the role of donors in Philanthrope activities, FPI (Friends of Philanthrope International) was an alternate and best idea focusing on organizing Philanthrope friends worldwide and finally FPI was established with the active support and donations of Pakistani labor and business communities in UAE, Malaysia, London and New York. FPI is regularly supporting Philanthrope and its activities. The organization was made practical and revived with firm commitments in early 2005.
Its main focus is on vulnerable children and women (Education/WASH/Health and Nutrition/Livelihood/FARMERS Rights & Food Rights). Currently, it is working on its 10 years plan, DDG - (Decade Development Goal) 2011-2021 structured for the whole of NWFP while TIDP- (Tribal Integrated Development Program) for FATA.
Philanthrope has played key role in emergency relief and rehabilitation in the October 8 Earth quake affected areas in 2005 and in the 2009 IDPs crises of Malakand, Swat and FATA; and in 2010 floods in Pakistan; and also in complex emergencies (2008-2017) and is still on the forefront to help support the down trodden marginalized tribals along with the white collars elders of FATA who have become IDPs in their own country.
