TheNetwork for Consumer Protection was established in 1992 as a non profit making organization and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) under the section 42 of Companies Ordinance 1984. Initially, at the time of establishment TheNetwork for Consumer Protection started a campaign against imodium drops health scandal, which resulted led to hundred of deaths, in 1991. The campaign was consolidated into the association for rational use of medicine funded by Oxfam in 1992.
TheNetwork representatives focused their vigor for consumer protection in various areas such as water , breastfeeding, pharmaceutical , tobacco control and consumer rights, access to justice, gender violence and women empowerment, public health under WTO. TheNetwork can claim credit for contributing to drafting and promulgation of important consumer protection legislations, prohibition of smoking and protection of non-smokers health ordinance 2002 and protection of breastfeeding & child nutrition ordinance 2002 in the country.
TheNetwork has increasingly played a strategic, catalytic and facilitative role to promote the awareness and enhance the livelihoods for consumers in Pakistan. the organization depends on the ongoing support and collaboration of different partners - national and international organizations- to meet its core objectives to protect the consumers.
