The Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management (GIDRM) commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) aims to strengthen disaster risk management as an integrated approach in selected partner countries. Disasters destroy long-standing development successes and reduce development opportunities. Despite an increasing understanding of the complexity of risks, they are not always adequately incorporated in development planning, both in partner countries and by international donors. A core problem is the lack of skills to comprehensively assess and deal with systemic and multiple risks along with uncertainties. Often, sectoral development decisions contribute to the emergence of new risks. Integrated measures in multi- and bilateral development programmes of different sectors can reduce this tendency. The global project focuses on the preventive management of disaster risks, necessitating new and transformative approaches to facilitate the essential paradigm shift for risk-informed development pathways.
