Fellowship Overview

The John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University invite journalists and people working in service of journalism to spend nine months exploring challenges facing the field and developing as more effective, purposeful and resilient leaders.

The fellowship is grounded in the belief that people closest to journalism's hardest problems are best placed to help solve them, and that strengthening journalism can deepen trust within communities and build more resilient democracies.

Fellows spend nine months, from September through May, in residence at Stanford University, exploring a question about journalism, testing new approaches and learning alongside a small cohort that includes fellows from around the world. The experience includes individual coaching, customized workshops, access to Stanford classes and talks, and a global alumni network.

Fellows receive a $135,000 stipend for the nine months, Stanford tuition and health insurance, and a health supplement for dependents enrolled in Stanford coverage. The fellowship also provides advice on finding rental housing and settling into the Stanford area.

Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience. Eligible applicants include people directly involved in producing journalistic content, people in operations or strategy roles at news organizations, and people working with organizations that support or collaborate directly with journalists. A college degree and experience in a traditional newsroom are not required. Freelancers and independent contractors are welcome if most of their work is in journalism.

The fellowship is not intended for people seeking a degree, working in public information or public relations, producing in-house or industry communications, serving as government employees, or working as full-time academics. Applicants working for or with organizations that are not editorially independent are not considered.
