Fellowship Overview
The Human Rights Scholarship Program provides financial support to domestic and international students commencing graduate research degrees, with a focus on projects that contribute to the study and advancement of human rights.
The scholarship supports graduate research in the field of human rights. It is designed to enable students to develop research that contributes to a deeper understanding of human rights and supports advancement in this area through academic inquiry.
Eligible applicants must have received an offer for a graduate research degree commencing in the year of award and must intend to conduct research in the field of human rights. Applicants must not have completed a research qualification at the same or higher level as the degree for which the scholarship is being sought. Candidates are required to submit an online application that demonstrates their commitment to the peaceful advancement of human rights beyond academic study, including voluntary work or relevant work experience, and explain how their proposed research contributes to the human rights field.
The scholarship provides a living allowance of $44,500 per year (2026 full-time rate) for up to 2 years for Master by Research candidates and up to 3.5 years for doctoral candidates. It includes a full fee offset for up to 2 years for Master by Research students or up to 4 years for doctoral students. Additional support includes a relocation grant of $2,000 for students moving from outside Victoria or $3,000 for international students moving to Australia, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for eligible international students. The total indicative value ranges from $89,000 to $155,000 depending on study duration.
Applications are assessed by a selection panel based on academic merit, application strength, and course entry score. Candidates are ranked, and the scholarship is awarded to the highest-ranked applicants. Successful applicants are notified by email in February of the following year.
