Fellowship Overview

The Urban Studies Foundation has launched the International Fellowships 2026 to support early-to-mid career urban scholars from the Global South through an extended sabbatical at an academically accredited host organisation anywhere in the world.

The program supports writing up existing research findings for publication, development of high-quality academic outputs, strengthening scholarship of the Global South, fostering collaboration between Fellows, Mentors, and host institutions, building international academic networks, advancing research leadership, promoting global exchange of ideas, supporting urban studies scholarship, and generating new understandings of urban realities within and across the Global South. Eligible themes may include climate, development, ecology, finance, governance, housing, migration, mobility, planning, policy, political economy, public health, social equity, sustainability, transport, and technology.

Each Fellowship supports a sabbatical period of three to nine months for scholars whose primary data collection and analysis have already been completed and are ready to be transformed into publishable outputs such as journal articles, book chapters, monographs, or books. The Fellowship is not intended to fund new research projects or additional fieldwork. Candidates must be based at the chosen host organisation during the Fellowship period, as remote Fellowships are not considered.

Applicants must be nationals of countries on the OECD ODA recipient list, reside in one of those countries, and hold a formal affiliation with a university, higher education institution, or research organisation in those countries. Applicants must have received a relevant PhD within the last ten calendar years, unless an approved career break extension applies. Previous International Fellows are not eligible to apply again.

The host institution may be located in the Global South or Global North, and applicants must explain why the selected organisation is suitable for their proposed work. A suitable Mentor with relevant expertise and mentoring experience must be identified to guide the Fellow during the sabbatical. The host environment should provide strong academic support, networks, and opportunities for collaboration.

The requested budget must be reasonable and cover costs directly related to the Fellowship, such as travel, accommodation, food, visa costs, insurance, and research resources. Additional limited support may also be available for extraordinary childcare or disability-related costs, subject to prior approval.
