Media Matters for Democracy-MMfD

‘Media Matters for Democracy’ is a not-for-profit geared towards rights-based advocacy for freedom of media, regulation policy reform and freedom of expression, online and offline, strengthening democratic values in Pakistan. We are a team of young and dynamic media professionals, passionate about introducing higher journalistic standards, advocating for media rights, encouraging innovation, and Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) for development. We truly believe that an empowered media is the lifeline of an open and progressive society and, hence, a vital element for democratic progress in Pakistan. Media Matters for Democracy focuses on these strategic areas;

1. A professional media industry with high journalistic and ethical standards is vital for a democratic society. We are working directly with the Pakistan Coalition for Ethical Journalism, for the promotion of higher industry standards and contributing through research, analysis, direct engagements with media and regulators for the development of a professional and responsible media industry.

2. Freedom of Expression remains the larger goal of all our interventions, and we are engaging in advocacy for public policy reforms to ensure that the media don’t face direct regulation by the state and are working with the media for professional journalistic practices.

3. The safety of journalists - MMfD works closely with Pakistan Coalition on Media Safety, PCOMS, for industry-based and policy solutions for an end to impunity and safer journalistic practices.

4. Effective Media Regulation and Pro Media Policies to ensure the independence of the media are among the organizational objectives.

5. New Media and Digital Technologies are changing the face of journalism across the world. MMfD is geared towards introducing this technology within the industry and strives to ensure that Pakistani Media outlets and journalists are able to understand, utilize, and optimize the potential of these technologies.
